I was in the grocery store the other day, talking to my favorite cashier… we tend to talk a lot. She was telling me that her husband finally got a shot at a job that he’s been going after for a while and the first thing I said was “I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you”. That started me thinking about the origins of all those common sayings, mostly superstitious, that we all incorporate into our daily lives. I don’t really consider myself to be a superstitious person but I certainly don’t hesitate to use a superstitious saying when it fits the situation. I used to have a lucky necklace, but when my son was a baby every time I picked him up he went for it, so it went right back to the jewelry box… maybe I should pull that back out of there – I would never want to turn down any extra good luck!
So that conversation at the store was the inspiration for this blog. I’ve always loved the old legends, myths and stories from around the world and it’s just amazing to me how many of them stem from a superstition. I’m going to be adding the ones that were fascinating to me and I hope you’ll enjoy them too. Feel free to comment and let me know if there’s a superstition or two that you’d be interested in learning about, I’ll do my best to find it and bring it to light.

Since Valentine’s Day is fast approaching I thought it might be fun to explore those superstitions about finding your true love. I found these superstitions in a book written during the late 19th century and while they were common beliefs during that time I believe they had been passed down from mother to child for many generations. Some of these wonderful bits of folklore were a surprise to me and some of them I remember from my own childhood. . . . → Read More: Superstitious Methods for Finding Your True Love

Here are some really fun superstitions about hands, feet, hair and even dimples that were common during the 1800′s and probably centuries before then too. A lot of these were new to me and I was awfully amused by them so I hope they’ll be new and fun for you too. I’m not sure how much belief I put in any of these, but they do make you think… next time I run into someone with a dimple on their chin I’m probably gonna be extra cautious! . . . → Read More: Common Superstitions for Feet, Fingers and Other Body Parts

ANCIENT MYTHS
Crystals, minerals and metals have played various roles in the myths and legends of human cultures throughout history. They are fascinating examples of the attempts of the men and women of ancient times to explain their world without the benefit of science and with each culture’s biases, superstitions and interests impressed upon them and therefore provide us with an especially vivid picture of the psychology of ancient man. . . . → Read More: Myths About Gemstones
