Answers to All of Your Questions About Ancient Superstitions

This post is for everyone who has asked me which theme I’m using on this site or how to improve traffic to their site, which plugins do i use, etc.  I hope this will be easier for everyone who’s interested in this info rather than trying to find your comment again!  I’ve been trying to get back with everyone who has asked a question, but my site has been targeted by some “automated comment spam software” that has dumped thousands of off topic comments onto my site.  I think it’s incredibly important to get back to you in a timely fashion, but that’s a little challenging right now.  So I thought I would try to address these very commonly asked questions here and I’ll keep updating this post as I think of new stuff or if I happen to answer a question that would be beneficial for everyone.

Question Number 1

I get a lot of questions about the theme that I use on this site — it’s the Catch Evolution Theme and it’s a free WordPress theme.  I like it because it’s extremely customizable and a lot of the themes I tried out were not.  I’ve got a quick tip for you too…if you’re curious about the theme on any site scroll down to the bottom of the page and many times you’ll see which theme or platform the blog is using listed right there.  I was at another one of my favorite sites the other day and they were using the same theme as I use on this site and it looked so totally different that I didn’t even recognize it!

Question Number 2

Lots of you want to know how old this blog is.  This is one of my first blogs and I started it right before Halloween 2010, it seemed to be a good time to look into superstitions, black cats and all that fun stuff, I’ve always been intrigued by the old legends and it’s been a lot of fun for me to delve into them again.

Question Number 3

How can I get more traffic to my site?  I think that’s a question we all ask — all the time!  If you don’t want to pay for traffic or spend all of your time in forums hoping to leave a good backlink to your site then you might want to start with a really good set of keywords in your domain name.  First, let me say that I am NOT an expert, although I’ve picked up some stuff in the years that I’ve been online that may come in handy for you too.

If you want long lasting, free traffic then a good domain name is essential, go over to the Google Keyword Tool and try out some keyword combinations.  Find a good one with not to much competition and base your domain name choice on that research.

I hear this all the time.  Content is King!  The search engines love fresh, unique content… that’s just one of the reasons that blogs are so popular.  So if you want traffic, give the search engine gods what they want — Great Content.

Once your site is up and running you’ll want to get a few great plugins to improve your traffic, I use Platinum SEO, Google XML Sitemaps and SEO Slugs. Each of these plugins will help in different ways to improve your traffic, the Google XML Sitemaps will make your blog more search engine friendly, the SEO Slugs plugin removes the common words from your post slugs and the Platinum SEO plugin is just great –an all inclusive solution– for getting your site ranked higher in the search engines.  Akismet is the plugin that I use to control comment spam, although I still have to mark the actual spam before it will learn and hopefully get rid of the “automated comment spam” that has been so common lately.

Question Number 4

Where is my site hosted and would I recommend my hosting company?  I’m sure there are many good hosting companies, but Hostgator was recommended to me and I’ve been very happy with their service.  I can host unlimited domains for only $9.95 a month and if I had chosen a different hosting plan it could have been even less than that!  If anyone is interested in getting their first month of hosting for just a penny use this coupon code –ancientcoupon– when you sign up.  If any of you do buy anything from Hostgator then I’ll get a commission from them — so Thanks Very Much — in advance 🙂

Question Number 5

Am I on Facebook or Twitter?  Not yet… but when I eventually do find the time you guys will be the first to know!  For right now the easiest way to find out the latest post is just to sign up for the rss feed, it’s hiding up at the top of the page on the right hand side.  Just choose your favorite reader and subscribe and you’ll be all set!

Question Number 6

What are my sources?  I do a lot of reading and I especially love the old myths, legends and fairy tales.  So many of these stories rely on a superstitious element and I thought it would be fun to take another look at the origins and beliefs of these superstitions.  I find the best source for these superstitions in books from the 1800’s, check over at Project Gutenberg if you’d like to do a little reading too!

Question Number 6

Some of you have asked about guest posting, I certainly appreciate the offer and I might consider doing that at some point.  Right now I really enjoy doing the research and the writing  so I really would hate to give that up.  But, when I do decide to allow some guest postings you guys will be the first to know.
